Protecting your identity gives you control of your money.

Identity theft occurs when a person steals your social security number, your credit account numbers and other personal information and begins making transaction in your name. 

How to Avoid It

  • Verify the transactions on your account statements.
  • Do not throw out documents with credit information or personal information, destroy them.
  • Check your mail. Don't leave letters in your mailbox for prolonged periods of time.
  • Check your credit history to detect unauthorized accounts.
  • Don't provide personal information such as your account number, social security or credit card account numbers over the phone to unknown parties.

If You Are a Victim of Identity Theft:

1 .Contact any of the credit agencies and ask them to put a fraud alert on your report. 

  • EQUIFAX
    To apply for a credit report: 1-800-685-1111 
  • EXPERIAN
    To apply for a credit report: 1-888-397-3742
  • TRANSUNION
    To apply for a credit report: 1-800-916-8800

2. File a police report and get a copy of it.

3. Contact the creditor of each account that has been falsified or opened under your name,
    in writing, and cancel them.

4. Contact your creditors and inform them that you were a victim of identity theft.
